Functional braces

Function braces are the perfect solution to correcting a child or adolescent’s smile and its impact on their facial profile. Designed to improve protruding upper or lower front teeth, the way the molar teeth bite together and generally enhance the overall look of teeth.

This brace is worn to correct problems with the jaw such as temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ syndrome) and misaligned teeth. It ensures that both the upper and lower teeth match when they are closed which improves the patient’s bite and helps soften their general facial appearance by transforming the jaw line.

Functional braces are particularly suitable for children and teenagers as their teeth are still developing and they are at high risk of poor alignment and the teeth overcrowding.

These types of braces work by exerting gentle pressure on teeth over a period of time. This process forces the teeth to realign and pushes them into a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing position.

A functional brace consists of a plastic base which covers the mouth and is held in place via metal clips over the teeth. Particularly useful for people who play contact sports, functional braces are removable and should only be worn during the day.

Typically, functional braces are slightly larger than tradition fixed braces which means it may take the wearer a little longer to become accustomed with every day wear, however most find after time it becomes comfortable.

Each function brace takes approximately two to three weeks to be made from an impression which has been taken from your top and bottom teeth. Following which an appointment will be made to fit the brace, ensure you are comfortable with it and also offer advice on how to use and maintain the brace.

After fitting, patients will be seen by Keppel Advanced Dentistry every six to eight weeks to assess progress.

The length of use will depend on the extent of your orthodontic problem. The more severe the problem the longer it will take, however typically it takes 10 months to a year for the brace to work.

Today, thanks to the latest developments in dental technology there are many examples of functional braces including popular treatments such as the Inman Aligner, Invisalign/Invisalign teen and Stb social 6 braces.

With such choice available it’s vital that you have a full consultation at Keppel Advanced Dentistry to weigh up all your options. Call us now to book your appointment or complete our online booking form and we will call you back as soon as possible.
