CEREC crowns are the latest in crown technology which means you can have a new crown made and fitted in one visit to the dentist instead of the usual two or three visits required with a conventional crown.
At Keppel Dentistry you can even see your new composite tooth being milled in the reception area while you wait!
What is CEREC?
CEREC is a revolutionary system that enables your dentist to design, fabricate and fit a new crown in one visit. Your dentist will prepare your tooth in the normal way, but instead of making a mould of your tooth and sending it off to a dental laboratory for a technician to make your crown, a digital image is taken using a special camera.
The image is then used to create a 3D model of your tooth, which is used as the template to design your crown. When your dentist is happy with the tooth he sends the template to an onsite milling machine which makes your new tooth from a high quality ceramic block. The blocks come in a wide variety of shades and colours. Your dentist will choose the one that most closely matches your surrounding teeth.
Once the tooth has been produced your dentist will make colour adjustments so it matches any staining or characterisation on your existing teeth before polishing it or glazing it in a furnace.
Once the dentist has done all of the preparation you will be invited back to the dental chair where your new permanent crown will be cemented into place over your prepared tooth.
What are the benefits of CEREC?
There are several advantages to having treatment with CEREC over conventional, laboratory-made restorations:
- Everything is done in a single visit.
- You only need one set of local anaesthetic injections.
- Your dentist is in complete control of the final result – the crown is designed and made from start to finish by your dentist who has total control over how it will look and fit. A laboratory crown is made by someone who hasn’t even seen the patient.
- You don’t have to have temporary crowns
