Adult orthodontics – why more adults are attracted to orthodontic treatment…

Did you know that 20% of patients undergoing orthodontic treatment are now adults? This is mainly down to flexibility offered by the treatments of today.

Metal braces

Once upon a time metal braces used to be associated with having a ‘metal mouth’ and the designs of the past were clunky, uncomfortable, and not particularly aesthetic. Today, metal braces are sleek and the brace hardware is more compact, rendering them much more comfortable than their historic counterparts. This makes them much more attractive to adult patients who are looking for a minimally-invasive solution.

Ceramic braces

Ceramic braces are created to be the same size and shape as traditional metal braces, the difference being their aesthetics, which are discreet thanks to their use of clear brackets and tooth-coloured wires. Where the brace hardware is concerned, these cosmetic details make a huge difference, allowing them to blend in with your teeth and rendering them less noticeable to others. A further advantage of ceramic braces is that the components do not stain, so your teeth are whiter-looking than they would be with other brace-types during the treatment period.

Lingual braces

Lingual braces are commonly referred to as an ‘invisible’ treatment’ and are arguably the most aesthetic brace available. As they sit on the tongue side of your teeth, they are almost totally out of view from others. Used to correct a myriad of orthodontic complications from spacing to crowding to alignment issues, lingual braces are versatile and perfect for patients who do not wish for the aesthetics of their smile to change throughout the treatment period. Lingual braces use the same effective methods as traditional metal brace models to guide your teeth into a desired position, incorporating a flawless aesthetic design.

Clear plastic aligners

Clear plastic aligners put the patient’s lifestyle at the forefront of their design, offering the option of removing the brace to brush and eat with ease. Patients are required to wear the brace for 22 hours each day, giving a 2 hour window in which to eat, brush, and remove for reasons such as speaking for a presentation at work or similar; clear plastic aligners are particularly attractive to adults in client-facing roles for this reason.
