Skin peels at Keppel Skin – what you need to know

What can skin peels be used to treat?

Skin peels are a cosmetic procedure that can treat a number of conditions including pigmentation, wrinkles, scarring, uneven skin tone and sun damage. In simple terms, a skin peel is used to carefully remove the outer layers of your skin, producing a rejuvenated appearance. Skin peels even out your skin tone in order to improve your facial aesthetic, removing dead skin cells to promote the growth of new cells. Skin peels are minimally-invasive and do not involve anything surgical or any needles.

A little bit about skin biology….

Skin cells are always in a sequence of regeneration – new cells are created and work their way up to the outside layers, eventually shedding off.  The outermost layers of your skin are made up of layers of dead skin which are secured together with oils (lipids) and water, producing a protective skin barrier.

Keppel Skin can offer superficial or medium depth peels and we use EPI-Peel system which uses 40% glycolic acid. Here is some information about both types of peel….

Used to treat: mild/moderate wrinkles, long-term sun damage, pigment changes.

Superficial peels are the most common type of skin peel and also the mildest. Peeling is complete within 3-7 days and can be repeated after 4 weeks. Superficial peels are suitable for most skin types, including acne prone skin. There is no ‘down time’ associated with superficial peels which means you can continue your day-to-day activities immediately though you should seek to have the procedure performed a week before a special occasion as this will offer the best aesthetic results.

In preparation for the peel, your skin will be cleansed and the peeling solution can be applied. In some cases the solution is removed after several minutes and in others it can be removed later at home. You will feel a minor tingling sensation, nothing more – in some cases patients report feeling nothing at all!

Used to treat: skin discolouration, skin roughness, fine lines, large pores.

Medium peels can be completed within 7-8 days and should be repeated every 6-12 months afterwards in order to maintain the effects. Medium peels are twice as strong as superficial peels and work well to tackle correction rather than maintenance.

Before your medium depth skin peel, your skin will be thoroughly cleansed before the peeling solution is applied. The peel is then neutralised and removed.

Before treatment at Keppel Skin

You will need to attend an initial consultation before the procedure so that we can ascertain your suitability for a skin peel. This will also be an opportunity to discuss your expectations of treatment and ask any questions you might have.
